Gender Norms

Description

Just a quick fingerpaint I did on my iPad to demonstrate the gender norms when it comes to dressing and grooming standards for one of my fictional cultures. Both men an women have long hair and can wear it either straight or curly regardless of gender (yes, the men can wear ringlets if they feel like it and not be called sissy for it). Both can wear pants or robes/dresses, but women's dresses are usually poofier, and men's are less so. Women can wear corset-like belt pieces (like the minty green one you see on her), but for a man to do so would be bizarre. They wear much skinnier, simple belts instead, if they must wear a belt. Women don't usually wear the shoulder-cape thing, but a few do, and it's not totally strange (it's kind of like a woman wearing a tie, I do it all the time and no one says anything about it--but you have to have the right kind of fashion sense and guts to pull it off.)

Also, green is the traditional color for girls (instead of pink) and red is the color for men (instead of blue). There are cultural reasons for this, (a Mother Earth, Father Fire kind of thing) but actually on their wedding day, the genders flip flop which color they wear, as a reminder to never forget each other, and seek to emulate the good qualities that come more naturally to the other gender. It's a fun concept. :)

Anyway, feel free to ask questions and tell me what you think! :)
